Collaboration with International Nonprofits

ASHA collaborates with Dynamic Champions of Sisterhood (DCS), a USA-based nonprofit, to empower girls in Janata Vasahat through various initiatives:

Agnipankh Academy

  • Started in September 2016, Agnipankh Academy aims to develop leadership skills and confidence in girls.
  • Girls conduct internet research and prepare lessons on tablets, sharing their knowledge with other communities.
  • Trained 13 girls, reaching 316 girls in communities like Tadiwalaroad, Bibvewadi, Nigdi, and Vishrantwadi.

Book Reading

  • ASHA conducts international book reading clubs since 2018, with DCS's support.
  • 18 girls participated in reading books like "Anne Frank’s Diary," "Not Without My Daughter," and "I Am Malala."

Soccer

  • Held three soccer camps from 2016 to 2019 to encourage girls' interest in sports.
  • Provided exposure to soccer techniques and professional play, with three girls playing interclub matches and one girl participating in under 14 district selections.

Maker’s Auto

  • Mumbai-based NGO conducts science workshops, teaching girls to make solar models and visit scientific institutions like Vigyanshram at Pabal.
  • Girls learn screen printing and create jute bags with the club logo.

Gully Lab

  • Launched in December 2019, Gully Lab focuses on composting, Kathak dance, and drawing techniques.

Since 2016, ASHA’s collaboration with Limitless Child International has enriched girls’ development through innovative projects. From soccer camps to science workshops, these initiatives have empowered girls, fostering their interest in arts, sports, and promising careers.

BSI Partnership Overview

Established in 2013, Build a School in India (BSI) is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for underserved students in India, irrespective of their socioeconomic backgrounds. BSI collaborates with nonprofit organizations across India, working alongside local donors to support students and schools' success.

Currently, BSI operates five schools, educating approximately 2,500 students across communities. BSI also supports community-based learning programs, focusing on skill development for youth and income-generating activities for women.

Since September 2022, BSI has partnered with ASHA to enhance higher education and training opportunities for girls in 9th to 12th grades. ASHA focuses on nurturing girls' talents alongside their regular education, offering additional classes in spoken English, computer skills, and drawing. This comprehensive approach aims to empower girls to pursue careers aligned with their passions.

Early Intervention Program

Among the community projects about prevention of vulnerability and promotion of healthy living, ASHA undertake small projects in areas of felt needs. In association with one of our resource agency, SOFOSH (Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospitals), which is a care center for orphan babies, ASHA initiated a program named Early Intervention.

ASHA initiated the early intervention services in December 2010 along with inputs from Dr. Anupama Sen who is a pediatrician and ASHA’s Chairperson. We came across babies with variety of conditions, multiple surgical interventions for some congenital intestinal condition, recurrent pulmonary infections, hearing difficulty and speech impairment etc. Some babies have diagnosed medical conditions while others have developmental delays. The pediatrician does the medical evaluation and investigations. Other than medical inputs, these babies need adequate stimulation for their developmental maturation.

We recruited a group of 3-4 caretakers to spend few hours dedicated to two babies per caretaker. They look after the babies’ bathing, feeding, medical care, physiotherapy and any other specific need as per the medical condition of the babies.

These are the women clients of ASHA, who attended domestic violence services. They were happy to take up this work to help them as well as derive satisfaction of taking care of the orphans.

The overall sense of satisfaction in taking care of these babies is very evident. Ten babies are being provided with early intervention. From December 2010, total 81 children were taken care of in Early Intervention Project till March 2017.

Family Development Program

ASHA worked with another NGO, Swabhiman from June 2011 to October 2016 in three communities of Pimpri Chinchwad area of Pune namely Dalvinagar Shradnagar and Durganagar. This program was based on approach known as FDP( Family Development Program), developed by the French organisation Inter Aid.

This approach believes that short term support to poorer families help them to develop their capacities to solve problems on their own by giving adequate guidance and support,in order to progress towards increased autonomy, stability and reduced poverty.

Collaboration with TSS - Team Spreading Smiles of Joy

Team Spreading Smiles (TSS), a Mumbai-based volunteer group, has been collaborating with ASHA since November 2020. TSS conducts weekly online activities, including spoken English, drawing, and art and craft classes, through video tutorials for ASHA's girls group.

The online spoken English classes primarily target 9th to 11th-grade girls, helping them improve their English conversational skills. These classes boost their confidence and prepare them for part-time jobs and higher education after 12th grade.

Drawing classes are another significant activity, fostering girls' creativity and self-expression. TSS volunteers prepare girls for elementary and intermediate certificate drawing examinations, providing them with additional marks in SSC board exams. In 2022, seven girls appeared for the elementary drawing exam, with notable achievements. TSS continues to support these girls with online preparation classes and drawing materials as needed.
