Our Programs
- Assess and counsel individuals convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
- Conduct awareness programs for children about 'bad touch.'
The POCSO Act, 2012, ensures that individuals who exploit children as sexual objects face appropriate punishment.
Research indicates that offenders often have significant psychopathology and are likely to reoffend. Protecting children from these offenders is crucial but challenging, given the lack of a reliable follow-up system in India.
Our project targets convicted offenders during their imprisonment. Qualified clinical psychologists and psychiatrists will lead this effort, with the support of jail authorities and mental health teams.
The primary goal is to provide appropriate counseling to address underlying mental health issues and prevent reoffending. Currently, the project is operational at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune. We have permission to expand this initiative to all nine central jails in Maharashtra, contingent upon securing the necessary funding.
Empowering Children and Parents
Since November 2023, ASHA has been conducting interactive sessions on personal safety, focusing on identifying and addressing "Bad Touch" situations, for both children and parents. Led by ASHA's chairperson, Dr. Anupama Sen, a pediatrician, and Ms. Mukta Kale, an experienced counselor, these sessions aim to empower families with knowledge and strategies to protect children from potential harm.
By April 2024, ASHA has successfully organized 9 sessions, engaging approximately 214 children and 14 parents. These sessions took place in various settings, including the Yerawada Prison crèche, Anganwadi centers in communities, tuition classes, and Chaitraban Vasahat in Bibvewadi, ensuring widespread reach and impact.
